Knife Sharpening Training Course FAQ

The Sharpening Course Specialists

Everything we get asked about knife sharpening

At Sharp Knives Sales & Training Ltd, we receive plenty of questions about our unique and exclusive Five-Day Sharpening Training School course, here in Radstock, Bath. Our course gives you the skills and know-how to not only start a sharpening business but also how to professionally sharpen blades, knives, grooming clippers, gardening tools etc.

We’ve put together a list of our most frequently asked questions about our Five-Day Sharpening Training School course.

This depends on your business plan or ideas. Part of the course is spent talking to the instructor and creating a bespoke equipment list. Low-end average equipment costs would be in the region of £5,000. However, if you could allow a bit more then more business earning potential will be available.

Yes, we are an authorised and approved training centre. Your trainer will be Matthew Nash, who has many years of experience both as a sharpener and an accredited trainer. Matthew travelled to the USA to be trained by the manufacturers; Wolff Industries, The Edge Pro and Nebraska Blades. Not until he achieved a full and detailed theoretical and practical level did Matthew get to be an approved and authorised trainer representing the companies.

Yes, you will receive a certificate upon finishing the course. Your trainer will hand them out on the last day of training.

Once you have the customers, anywhere between £60 to £120 an hour is easily achievable. Part of the course details how to get customers and what are the best-earning services.

Being both mobile and based in a workshop would be the ideal option. However, one or the other would work just as well. Take a tour of the trainers sharpening van and discuss in detail what would be best for you, and then make the decision.

The radius of locations you should cover depends on where you’re based in the country. For denser populated areas, you wouldn’t want to go too far out. However, in more sparse areas, you would want to travel a bit further. We’re aware that the more time you spend on the road, the less time you have to get on with the task at hand, not to mention the cost of fuel eating into your profits. Your trainer will have some good ideas for you to get the most out of your time on the road.

Plenty of businesses such as dog groomers, horse groomers, hairdressers, barbers, ordinary people at their homes and garden centres etc. will need professional sharpening services. Don’t worry if you don’t know where to start. Your trainer will give you lots of ideas and also what businesses to target first to get you earning as fast as possible.

Yes and No. The school is a separate company, but the trainer also runs his own independent and very successful sharpening business, so his advice is based on real-life events.

You can buy everything you initially need from us here at Sharp Knives Sales & Training Ltd to start your sharpening business. You can also buy your consumables and spares directly from us on our website. When you buy from us it is the same as buying directly from the manufacturer, as we are the UK warranty centre for both Wolff Industries and The Edge Pro and will honour any warranties or repairs.

We run a sharpening forum for new and experienced sharpeners. Once trained, you’re invited to join and ask any questions you may have. The community of fellow sharpeners will give you great advice and support from their wealth of knowledge. We also offer a follow-up day course whereby the trainer will come to your site for the day and support you in your environment.
